The State shoot went off without a hitch. Only 13 shooters attended and were greeted with some fairly nice conditions ranging from 2-3mph to 15 plus mph breezes. We entertained two shooters from Utah, Bill Alexander and Mike Paul. From Wyoming, Roy Walker attended and Pete Savage from Arizona also made the trip. Tom Price, Henry Pinkney, Tom Sakai, and Bryn Borras from the Golden State also shot with us.
After our shooters meeting, the National Anthem was played as Ole Glory was raised and things got underway right on time, thanks to our Range Officer Bob Hoppe. Of course, coffee and donuts were enjoyed before the games began.
We started Saturday morning off shooting 100 yards in the Sporter class in mild but tricky conditions. New shooter Cody Archibald wowed us all with a .085 to take small group honors, good job Cody! Jan Sarras took the aggregate followed by Steve Archibald and we found Jeff Schopper wrapping up third place.
At the break, our target crew, Jan Falzone, Barbara Borras and Kerry Sarras put on a hearty meal for everyone consisting of chili-dogs, chips and drinks. New targets were up and we then shot the LV at 100. Leading the way, Jan Sarras had his 100 yard game together followed by Roy Walker. Jan’s brother Bryn hung on to edge out Mike Paul by .042 to capture third place. The P.M. breezes had picked up and Mike Paul picked up the small group of the afternoon shooting a very respectable .171.
Sunday dawned near pretty as a picture in Northern Nevada. Nice conditions greeted us and after the usual morning clamor we started out in LV at 200 yards. Jan started of like a house afire with two match winners in the first two matches and quickly burned out there after. Leaving the door open, Bryn Borras walked right in and closed it tightly on all the rest of us. Jeff Schopper did his best to close the gap but even his outstanding small group agg winner of 0.193 could not pry the first place standing from Bryn. Bill Alexander finished strong and took third place.
Again, thanks to the target and scoring crew we all took a lunch break before getting on to the Sporter at 200. PVGC shooter Lonnie Gordon figured it out quickly after lunch and took the win. Bill Alexander picked right back up from the morning aggregate and took second. This left Roy Walker with the third place trophy. Before Jan stumbled, he did garner the small group for the yardage with a decent .295 in some fairly stiff winds. Actually the wind did not pick too badly until the last three relays on Sunday.
The SP/LV Grand was won by PVGC Inc. member Bryn Borras followed by Jeff Schopper (shooting a new Borden Rim Rock action) and Jan Sarras hung on for the third place finish.
Awards were dispatched quickly as a lot of the shooters had some long driving hours before them to get home. I wish to sincerely thank everyone who attended and showed support for our newly formed BR range. As Tom Price said, “You gotta support the band”! Clean up was done quickly and thanks to all that helped. Our next shoot is in July, LV and HV followed by the HV/UNL in October to complete the Nevada State Championships. I hope to see more shooters in the future. Be well and thanks again.

Six PVGC Inc. members invaded Phoenix April 2-3, 2005 to endure a windy shoot-out. Lonnie Gordon, Bryn Borras, Jan Sarras, Steve, Cody and Don Archibald all made the trip. Wednesday and Thursday provided quite a challenge in the warm-up days before the match. Saturday brought on the light to 25 mph gentle Arizona breezes and Sunday was worse. Steve Archibald also took 5th in the LV @ 100 yards. Steve Archibald took in a 6th place finish in the Heavy Varmint @ 200 yards and Jan captured 5th in the same event. Jan took an 8th in the LV grand and 9th in the HV grand and also placed first in the 200 yard HV Agg., along with a small group match winner that measured .261 and earned $50.00 for his effort. Jan also placed 7th in the Grand Agg ( two-gun). There were 134 shooters in attendance.

On June 4th and 5th, 2005, PVGC members Bryn Borras and Jan Sarras participated in the Folsom 100/200 LV/HV match at Sacramento. Bryn won the LV grand agg on Saturady and Jan won the HV grand agg on Sunday. This gave the PVGC members a One Two finish in the Two Gun with Bryn winning the Two Gun with a .050 edge for the week-end.
July 2005 Match
Greetings fellow shooters, we held our third shoot of the year under clear skies and in HOT weather. Temperatures ranged from 74* to 104* and winds from 1 to 13 MPH in a predominately East to West direction with some headwinds occasionally joining in on the melee.
We started in the LV Class and Bob McGraw made the best of his first trip to Reno a winner shooting a .2768 in mild morning tricky conditions. Lonnie Gordon placed second and Jan Sarras garnered the third place spot. Jan took small group for the agg with a nice 0.134. Travis Archibald, shooting in his first ever match, took a small group award in match five with a .259, way to go Travis.
After the lunch break we were greeted to the mild Nevada breezes at the start of the LV 200 contest. Don Archibald, aka “Pops” showed us all how to step up to the 200 yard line with a winning agg of .3864 in a pretty steady blow. Pops’ grandson Travis put up a .4334 to take second and his first “wood”. Not far back Bob McGraw anchored the third place spot. Lonnie Gordon shot the small group for the agg with a .349. McGraw’s win in the 100 coupled with his 3rd at 200 gave him the LV agg.
We rotated benches at the end of Saturday’s shoot and started at 200 in HV on Sunday morning. The conditions were fairly nice and Don Archibald was in the groove and won the HV 200 agg setting a range record of .2366. He also shot 3 of the 5 match winners and took small group with a .239.Lonnie Gordon captured second followed by Jan Sarras in third.
The afternoon match got underway promptly after the targets were moved in and lunch was served. Jan Sarras took top honors at 100yards with the only agg in the twos at .2638 in somewhat harsh conditions. If you weren’t burned by your group size you got burned by the heated winds in 100* plus temperatures. Tom Price took home Reno wood, winning second place with a .132 group in match five while posting a .3012 for his agg. Bryn Borras finished in third. Lonnie Gordon shot the small group ,a 0.124.
Thanks to all that attended and special thanks to the Range Officer Bob Hoppe and target crew-scorers Kerry Sarras and Jan Falzone. The hot conditions did not hamper the timeliness in their efforts to keep us going. Also, Kerry and Jan put out meals both days at lunch as well as morning treats while still getting it done at the wailing wall Lastly ,
Joe Valentine donated a rifle scale to the BR club, thanks Joe!
Our next shoot is the final leg of the Nevada State Championship, we’ll be shooting HV and 5 shot Unlimited October 22nd and 23rd. Next year we will be hosting some 300 yard shoots too! Please visit us at www.palominovalleygunclub.homestead.com.

Palomino Valley Gun Club hosted the final leg of the State shoot on October 22nd and 23rd. After the early morning ado of flag placement, bench set-up and coffee and donuts, things got underway promptly with Tom Price raising Ole Glory as we played our National Anthem. The morning was beautiful with a slight switchy breeze and mild 65* weather. We topped out weather-wise in the mid 70s area and afternoon winds from 5 -9 mph. Don’t believe those “lying flags!!
Rifles were weighed and basic safety issues were gone over and we were on the way. Our target crew did a GREAT job as usual and the games began right on schedule with Bob Hoppe commanding the line.
HV 100 was won by Jan Sarras with a .2058 agg. Steve Archibald nailed down 2nd and Lonnie Gordon captured 3rd. Small group for the yardage was shot by Bryn Borras who posted a .115
At the lunch break, as frames and flags were moved, Jan Falzone and Kerry Sarras got the “fixins” in order and soon folks were lined up for Texas style BBQ pork sandwiches . Not to settle in, the shooters rotated benches while working off their lunches. As is normal in the high desert climes, the breeze picked up for the 200 yard event.
Bryn Borras made a few equipment changes at the break and changes sure seemed to benefit his shooting. These changes vaulted Bryn to the yardage win with a .3218 agg. Jan Sarras finished 2nd and close behind from Arizona, Pete Savage had a lock on third. Bryn also had the small group at .384, nice for the conditions.
The Heavy Grand concluded with Jan in first, Bryn in second and Lonnie took third.
Day two…………Unlimited. Almost a repeat in conditions from Saturday. We started out at 200 yards with an unscheduled warm-up match as the backers were not turned on. Back to business, backers heated up and also Joe Valentine heated up and cranked out a nice .226 group that also stood through out for the yardage award. Joe’s agg was a very respectable .2190 .Tom Price shot a .2212 agg for 2nd and was followed by Cody Archibald’s .2334 for third place.
Same lunch, different day and a rotation too. The breeze turned into a wind at the start of the 100 yard contest. Bryn Borras must love the wind. He fired a really nice teen agg. of .1998 to take top honors. Joe Valentine slipped a little but still took 2nd with a .2498 agg followed by Cody Archibald’s .2820 for third. Bryn’s .161 in match 5 was the small group for the yardage.
The Unlimited Grand was won by Joe Valentine, Bryn Borras was second and Cody Archibald took third. Congratulations to all the participants and to the winners too.
As an addition to this event, the Sp and LV scores from the earlier shoot were calculated and Bryn Borras is our 4 Gun Champ. The rest played out in this order to fifth place, Jan Sarras, Steve Archibald, Lonnie Gordon and Tom Sakai.
We look forward to next year’s matches as we will host some 100/200/ and 300 yard shoots. I hope to see some new faces on the line next year. Be well and enjoy your winter months in good health.

Bob Hoppe, as our Range Officer and Jan Falzone along with my 'Bride" Kerry did a great job ( as usual) in helping run the match. Also as a side note, Bob Hoppe cleaned house at the 600 yard NBRSA Nationals in Sacramento this past week-end, April21st, 22nd and 23rd, way to go Bob!!! NEVADA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP UNLIMITED & SPORTER
APRIL 8th & 9th , 2006
Jeff Schopper 4/23/06
The first half of the Nevada State Championship was contested this April, with thirteen brave souls enjoying the Nevada Spring ( Burrrrr) Benchrest kick-off.
Saturday morning started with the established routine of raising Ol’ Glory and coffee and donuts for all, followed by the Sporter Class.
100 yards Sporter conditions were the usual calm to switchy first off, but proved to be no problem for Bob McGraw from Bishop, CA. or Cody Archibald. The young Cody showed no respect for his elders, and took the lead with a .2628 agg for first place. Bob posted the small group of the match with a beautiful 0.122, followed by Bryn Borras’s 0.157, Cody Archibald’s 0.160, Jim O’Brien’s .178, Lonnie Gordon’s 0.187. Top five at 100 Sporter: Cody Archibald (1), Tom Sakai (2), Jim O’Brian (3), Bob McGraw (4), followed up by Lonnie Gordon (5).
The Unlimited 100 yard 5 Shot started around noon, and was almost dominated by none other than the infamous Tom Price, with a 0.160, 0.120. 0.178. The Archibald’s also put up a great fight, but it was Bob McGraw that took small group honors with a magnificent 0.078, and finally the yardage with a 0.1994 agg. Top five at 100 Unlimited: Bob McGraw (1), Tom Price (2), Don Archibald (3), Cody Archibald (4), and Steve Archibald (5).
Sunday began with the 200 yard Unlimited, greeted with the usual switchy conditions we so dearly love. It was my first time shooting a rail gun, but I fell in love with them immediately when I took first place at 200 after a dismal start at 100. Those toys are fun, and I put one on order as soon as I got home. Bryn Borras took small group honors, with a 0.218, followed by Jeff Schopper’s 0.260, Jan Sarras’s 0.266 and Tom Price’s 0.286.
Top five at 200 Unlimited: Jeff Schopper (1), Tom Price (2), Steve Archibald (3), Lonnie Gordon (4), and Bryn Borras (5).
200 yard Sporter proved to be a little more difficult in the afternoon. Travis Archibald shot small group with a 0.343. Bob McGraw showed consistency counts and placed first, with a .3262 agg. Top five at 200 Sporter: Bob McGraw (1), Lonnie Gordon (2), Bryn Borras (3), Jeff Schopper (4), and Jan Sarras (5).
Grand Agg: Unlimited 100/200 Top Five: Tom Price 0.2138, Steve Archibald 0.2512, Lonnie Gordon 0.2600, Bob McGraw 0.2630, and Bryn Borras 0.2833.
Grand Agg: Sporter 100/200 Top Five: Bob McGraw 0.3083, Lonnie Gordon 0.3197, Bryn Borras 0.3375, Jeff Schopper 0.3430, and Tom Sakai 0.3443.
No amount of praise is enough for the Range Officer, Bob Hoppe, that has showed up at every one of our matches to oversee and run these competitions. Also, last but not at all least…the target/scoreing crew of Kerry Sarras and Jan Falzone. These two do everything from target changes, to babysitting us, to scoring, to cooking, and deserve a great amount of credit to the success of the matches we have put on. Without these three, BR as we know it here at PVGC could not exist.
Be well, shoot well, and if you can make it to one of our matches, we know you’ll enjoy yourselves at our new range.

PVGC Reno Scramble
Palomino Valley Gun Club hosted its first 100/200/300 match over Memorial Day Weekend. Though we planned for this event for some time, Mother Nature threw a real curve ball. Saturday’s 100 LV/HV was not shot because of heavy snow. With driving winds it was unbearable to stay at the stool to shoot. We just threw in the towel, had lunch and watched movies and made plans to start early on Sunday to see what time we could make up!
Sunday morning was quite breathtaking as the upper reaches of the mountains were now snowcapped and gorgeous in dawns early hours. The hot springs to the west of the range belied the day’s weather course as the steam rose directly skyward. The vapors seemed to disappear as the sun urged us on to a great shooting day at PVCG.
Without the presence of Tom Price, “The Whippen from Ripon”, new shooter Chris Chimits along with “The Wilton Wonder” Ron Chisick , raised Ole Glory and the games began.
We started at an early 8:00 AM sharp and we roared through the LV 100. Jim O’Brien won the agg with a .2606 in really twitchy conditions, followed by Jan Sarras and Bill Mellor. Lonnie Gordon nailed the small group with a hard earned .161. At 10:15 we were rolling on to the HV 100 making good time, yeehaw!!!
The HV100 was dominated by “The Wilton Wonder” Ron Chisick . Ron won the first two matches while posting small group with a nice .143. Bryn Borras took 2nd and Jim O’Brien kept pace for 3rd.
While the target crew served lunch the local boys moved the backers to 200 and flags were reset. We rotated seven benches and were ready to go. By around 12:45 the first shot resounded at 200 in the HV Class. Bill Mellor won the yardage taking 3 match winners along the way by posting a .3179 in some pretty good winds. Bob McGraw was on his heels with .393 in match #2 but Bill kept the hammer down. Bryn Borras grabbed the 3rd spot and shot a .603 in match 5. McGraw’s .393 was the small group winner.
Not much time was lost as we moved on to the LV 200. Incredibly, the scorers kept pace and almost always had the targets on the “Wailin Wall” before the start of each new match. A great job was done by Bob Hoppe, Jan Falzone, Barbara Borras and Kerry Sarras. Without a crew like this, one would be hard pressed to get through 4 Aggs in one day!
We continued on and finished up the LV 200 by around 4:30. The winners were a repeat of the HV 200. Bill Mellor’s .3676 followed by Bob McGraw’s .3816 and Bryn Borras placed 3rd with a .4044. Bill shot the small group, a nice .321. Everyone was pretty beat, but with a lot of co-operation from everyone we started and finished 4 complete Aggs and still had time to move the backers to 300 and reset flags for Monday’s 300 yard events, this too included a seven bench rotation. That’s a lot of walking at 300 yards!
Monday morning started off a little on the cool side and continuing his dominance Bill Mellor stayed on track and posted a .3053 to win the LV 300. Ron Chisick took 2nd followed by Cody Archibald. Jan Sarras shot the small group for the yardage with a nice .608. The breeze had turned to light winds and got somewhat worse as is the norm in high desert climes.
Finishing in the HV 300, Bill kept at it and won this Agg too with a .3773, Jan Sarras took 2nd followed by Bryn Borras in third. Steve Archibald managed a .745 to take small group honors despite finding his barrel was about a quarter turn short of being snugged up, maybe an explanation for a very large group in match #1.
Clean-up was done quickly and the awards were presented promptly so our out of state competitors could get on the roads home before the big traffic rush that always occurs on the holiday weekends. Their trips home were more comfortable having filled up on pulled pork sandwiches which were served for lunch immediately after the match, about 1:30 pm.
All in all we had a really nice shoot. The early springs in Northern Nevada are truly beautiful. At this time of year the grasses are as green as nature allows at 4300’ and is in stark contrast with the brown, sage, gray and red to rust colored hills. The early spring wildflowers that were in full bloom shivered, but endured the snow and were none the worse for wear as the mornings temps quickly rose once again. I thank all the attendees and all that have helped us out making this an upcoming premiere range here in the Southwest region!
Please visit out web site and check out the range and the shooters who come up to enjoy our sport. Next year we will be hosting more 200 and 300 yards shoots. 300 is a different breed of cat and was really enjoyed by all as it is not too often shot!

South West Regional Shoot Finale
The second leg of the South West Regional matches were held at Palomino Valley Gun Club on the 8th and 9th of July. The Folsom Shooting Club, in California , hosted the first half with Sporter and Light Varmint and we finished up with the Heavy Varmint and Unlimited here in Nevada . Other than abnormally high temperatures everything else was status quo.
The range was in great shape and shooters were up early for a day of practice and final tuning. Backers were set early Saturday morning and with a little adjusting of flags, everyone was ready to go. RO,
Bob Hoppe called the shooter’s meeting, introduced the referees and our crew and again went over safety concerns. Tom Price along with Chris Chimits raised Ole Glory and we were off.
Starting out in semi mild conditions, Bryn Borras posted a nice .102 which held for the small group of the yardage. Jan Sarras captured first place in the HV agg with a new range record agg of .1774. New shooter Chris Chimits received wood in his second match ever by taking the second place award with a .2334. Chris was shooting a new Bat actioned rifle assembled by Mike Bryant, a real beauty. Bryn Borras took third, posting a .2462.
We then moved onto the HV 200 and moved the backers accordingly. Kerry Sarras and Jan Falzone readied the lunches. Backers placed, tummies full, onward with stronger breezes. The winds were not kind! Our eventual 3 Gun Champ, Henry Pinkney picked up where he left off in Folsom, shooting lights out, capturing the win in the 200 agg, posting a .3801. You would have to be in attendance to appreciate the aggs in the conditions that Mother Nature served up. Bryn Borras took second, .3968, followed by Jan Sarras in third with a .3976. Small group for the 200 was turned in by Tom Sakai, an outstanding wind driven .249! Jan Sarras took first in the HV Grand with the only agg in the twos, .2860. Henry Pinkney snagged 2nd, Bryn Borras 3rd, Greg Wilson 4th followed by Jeff Schopper .
The HV gave us our SW Region 3 Gun Champ, Henry Pinkney followed by Jan Sarras, Greg Wilson, Bryn Borras and Tom Sakai.
The shooters got out early and enjoyed the nightlife the Reno Sparks area has to offer, fine dining, inexpensive rooms and plenty of “one armed bandits” aka….slot machines, and of course other table games. As hot as it was during shooting hours it cooled off nicely in the evenings, what a relief.
Sunday brought new hopes for all, but the Wind Machine started earlier than it had on Saturday for the Unlimited 10 shot events. We started off at 200 and first time to our range, shooter Dick Howell schooled everyone on shooting in the wind ala Rail. Jeff Schopper took second shooting a brand new rail built by Jerrel Mattingly from Utah . Bryn Borras garnered the 3rd place slot and also shot the small group at 200, a nice .363. New shooter Chris Chimits figured he would save bullets and only fired 5 rounds in the first match earning him a 10” penalty but it got his attention as we move towards the 100 yard mark.
Lunch was made ready as the shooters adjusted their flags for the 100 yard contest. With about a 45 minute lunch break, most everyone wanted to get it done and get on the road home.
Bryn Borras shot the small group, .189 in route to first place and a .3456 agg. Remember Chris, shooting a bag gun in the Unlimited; second place was his. Great job Chris, a .4078! The unstoppable Tom Price took third posting a .4180. Bryn Borras took the Grand followed by Jeff Schopper, Tom Price, Dick Howell and Don Archibald.
All four contests having been shot, these are the 4 gun winners through 5th place; Champion Bryn Borras, Henry Pinkney, Jan Sarras, Greg Wilson and Dick Howell.
Thanks to the local shooters who helped immensely putting on the shoot; it really does take a good group effort to pull these shoots off. We are lucky to have a great crew here at hand.
Once again I urge all shooters to support your brother clubs. Share a ride, share a bench and share our sport with others, invite a friend, a neighbor or youngster you know and introduce them to BR Shooting!
Thanks to all that came up to enjoy our range and compete and I hope to see you back for more shooting. Next year we will be hosting two and possibly three 200/300 yard Varmint matches. I hope to see some old friends and make some new ones at the Nationals, see you there. Drive safely, be well, and shoot well.

Nevada State Shoot, Second Leg, LV/HV 100/200
9/30-10/1, 2006
Can you say Bob McGraw? Our friend from Bishop California picked up in Reno where he left off at the California State Championships. Bob won the California and Nevada 4 Gun State Championships this year, 2006. Congratulations Bob!
We started off Saturday morning around 8:30 am with the safety rules first and the Flag was raised and we got started. It was somewhat chilly for the first couple of matches but most were wearing shorts before the lunch break.
Bob McGraw started out with a 0.148 and won the 100 LV start to finish with a .2130 agg in good conditions. We were all surprised that the scores were not better than we posted. Just because you can’t see the conditions, they are still there and do effect your POI. Chris Chimits, .2408 took second with a borrowed rifle and was followed by Jim O’Brien in third .2440. Jan Sarras had the yardage winner with a 0.101
We broke for lunch around 11:15 and the Target Crew/Scorers/Cooks/etc.
took over as usual and served lunch. We sated our appetites and then prepared for the afternoon HV 100 yard contest.
Not moving benches, yet, we switched to the HV class in somewhat “breezy” conditions. Rifles were weighed and the first shots of the afternoon resounded around 12:15. Jan Sarras won the HV 100 with his 2nd consecutive teen agg at 100 with a nice .1926 . Bob McGraw was hot on his heels taking 2nd with a .2138 and Chris Chimits nailed down 3rd shooting a .2540. Tom Price shot a range record small group of .077 , congratulations Tom. We finished up early, around 2:40pm and while the final tabulations were made, the backers were moved to 200 yards for Sundays start in HV at 200 yards. We rotated 7 benches Saturday afternoon in preparation for Sunday’s contest.
The awards for the day’s shooting were meted out and some shooters dialed in for the 200 yards games before heading into town for the Fine Dining and Gaming that is prevalent in the Reno/Sparks area.
We started off Sunday with an unplanned “warm-up” as this author neglected to check and make sure the backers were functioning. Some were quite happy and others were disappointed to find that they were in fact, not working. As it is said, ”Every group makes someone happy”. The problem was corrected and we re-started the match.
Not missing a beat, Bob McGraw shot three match winners in route to the 200 HV win with a .2595 agg. Jim O’Brien took second .2832, followed by a .2957 fired by Jan Sarras. Chris Chimits shot the small group for the yardage with a nice .289.
Bob McGraw was still red hot and took another 1st in the LV 200, shooting the small group along the way, a .360 while posting a .3654 agg in windy conditions. Gunsmith Tom Sakai took second .3897, followed by local shooter Lonnie Gordon in third with a .3995.
This shoot concluded the Nevada State 4-Gun shoot. Bob McGraw is the Nevada State 4-Gun Champion.
Again, thanks are in order for our “Great” target crew, Jan Falzone and Kerry Sarras. Additional thanks to Mike Schreier for calling the Saturday match and to Kerry Sarras for calling the Sunday match. We would be hard pressed to put on these matches without the family of friends we have here in our area. Be well, shoot well and I hope to see you on the line soon!

NBRSA Long Range “Varmint” Nationals
Novemburr 11th & 12th, Reno Nevada 2006
How does it happen? Two days before the shoot I was loading our trailer for the trip to the range in a short sleeved T-Shirt. What a nice week-end for the shoot, I smiled to myself as I toiled away. I arrived at the Palomino Valley Gun Club Range Thursday evening and prepared a few things in order to welcome shooters on Friday for a day of final tuning, registration and flags set-ups. Friday too was quite nice; a light sweatshirt was all that was needed by the Northern folks. Lou Murdica reminded me that his winters are around 73* in sunny Southern California. Folks got dialed in and all seemed well for the Saturday start of the LR Varmint Nationals.
1:30 AM., what the heck is all that racket? The wind had picked up, E-Z ups were rattling and it was flat COLD! We had to get up and put the awning down and make sure things were secure.
With the coffee made and the folks arriving to get started we had our shooters meeting. Tom Price and Bryn Borras raised the flag to the National Anthem and things got off to a cool but somewhat breezy start.
Eric Stanton is the LV 200 Champ with a nice agg of .3271 followed by first time shooter Allan Swartz, .3317, and Bryn Borras .3617 took third. Small group for the yardage was shot by Jan Sarras, .334 .
By the end of the LV 200 the winds had turned up a notch or two, around
8 to 14 mph with occasional gusts! We broke for lunch and then started in the HV 200. Range officer Mike Schreier called the shooters up and we were promptly underway. Lou Murdica started off the first match with a small group of .441 in route to winning the 200HV agg. .3055. Local shooter Lonnie Gordon .3389, placed 2nd followed by Jeff Yost who also shot the small group for the yardage, .326, and his agg. was .3600. Lou is the LV 200 yard Champion.
The target crew quickly moved the backers and the stationary backers as the competitors repositioned their flags to shoot the upcoming 300 yard event to be held on Sunday! Saturday night was frigid. All 3 trailers at the range had frozen water lines in the AM. As cold as it was, the day dawned clear although still uncomfortable. We saw a lot of sun till the high clouds moved in around 11:00 AM.
We started at 8:00 AM. in the HV class and Lou picked up where he left off Saturday winning the HV 300 with an outstanding .2440 to become the HV300 yard Champion. Jeff Yost captured 2nd, .3008, followed by Canadian shooter Robert Seemann in third with a .3223. Tom Price posted another PVGCI range record with a .350 in the last match to gain small group for the yardage.
BBQ’d pulled pork sandwiches fed the crowd and we quickly moved on the LV 300. Mac McCluskey took the small group for the yardage firing a .598 in match 2. Eric Stanton shot a .2727 to reign as the LV 300 Champion followed by Dave Blazzard’s .2899 in second, with Warren Stalling garnering 3rd with a .3715.
The LV Grand Champion is Eric Stanton, followed by Dave Blazzard, Jeff Yost, Warren Stallings and Lou Murdica. The HV Grand Champion is Lou Murdica followed by Jeff Yost, Lonnie Gordon, Eric Stanton and Bryn Borras. The 2Gun Long Range Varmint National Champion with a .006 win over Lou Murdica is ………..Eric Stanton, congratulations Eric! Jeff Yost finished 3rd followed by local shooter Lonnie Gordon and Dave Blazzard took 5th.
As the target crew and scorer did their jobs, most of the flag field was cleared and the awards were meted out quickly as many of the attendees had a long trip home with approaching weather as a concern. Eric Stanton and Lou Murdica had a little more traction as their vehicles held an extra cord of wood apiece. Jeff Yost also had more weight to contend with!
Congratulations to all the shooters for attending and enduring the elements. Just attending a National event is worth the price of admission as new friendships are made and old acquaintances are re-kindled.
Thanks to all that attended and please remember we are holding the 2007 Long Range “Varmint” Nationals next season. Hopefully in June, you will find yourself and a friend or two venturing to Reno to enjoy the competition and the area’s features as well. This year’s event was really unplanned and Mr. Murdica got thing rolling at the Raton Nationals. Since we had a scheduled shoot we embraced Lou’s suggestion to hold the event and were quite happy to have it here in Reno! With folks like Lou Murdica pushing for the best interest in the shooting sports things will get done, my thanks Lou. Our SW Regional Director Gary Sinclair helped us push this through and I too thank Gary!
Again, I am so honored to have a great supporting cast with our target crew, Kerry Sarras, Barbara Borras and scorer Jan Falzone along with range officer Mike Schreier. Robert Hoppe (our usual range officer) showed up and helped out too. Our club really came together and I had others that volunteered and I appreciate their concerns. As you folks know, it takes a lot of effort to put on matches, so please help your club put on the shoots in any way your time permits, they will thank you for your efforts! A special thanks to Dave and Sue Blazzard and those that attended know why, I sincerely thank you two, and all that supported this event! NBRSA Secretary Pat Ferrell had her hands full as all the awards had to be ordered very quickly to meet the deadlines. Pro-Tech Co. Inc. and Boo’s Trophies did a great job on the awards and were very timely in their deliveries, thanks folks!
Enjoy the upcoming holidays, your family and friends near and far, and I hope to see you on the line sometime next year. Be well, shoot well.

Nevada State Shoot
Sporter and Unlimited (WIND)
The 2007 season began with a whirlwind in Northern Nevada. The week-end was T-shirt to thermals in temperatures with seven to twenty MPH plus in wind speeds.
We started off in the Sporter Class at 100 yards. Bryn Borras (.2710) led the pack while nailing 3 match winners. Second was Lonnie Gordon (2790) followed by “Small Group” McGraw (.3006)Tom Sakai shot the smallest group of .172
After a short lunch break we continued on in the Unlimited Class. Bob McGraw (.1934) had his rail working and garnered 3 match winning groups in route to the 1st place award .Bob’s agg. was the 5th teen agg. shot on the range in three years and surpassed his previous record of .1994, congratulations. Teen aggs. don’t come easy anywhere, especially here and I can’t speak of “Luther” as of yet! I’m going to have to believe Mike Ratigan. Don Archibald (.2602) took 2nd followed by Bryn Borras(.2652). Bob shot the small group .127.
Sunday started colder and with higher wind speeds to contest the Unlimited at 200 yards. Mr. McGraw(.2342) shot ALL 5 small groups, the smallest being .348. Lapping the field he left 2nd to Cody Archibald (.3463) and Cody’s dad, Steve Archibald ).3890) took 3rd.
After a short beak we finished the Sporter 200 in some really BIG winds. Only 8 groups less than one inch were shot out of 55 groups. Again, Mr. McGraw took top honors (.6153). Everet Smith (.6548) took second along with the small group of .527. Bryn Borras (.6791) captured 3rd.
The clean up was done quickly and awards were meted out to the deserving. All in all a good shoot in tough conditions. Thanks to all the helped out, and special thanks to those that attended and shot in such adverse conditions. I urge all shooters to support your clubs or maybe even join one if not yet a member. The extra hands help a lot. As participants dwindle so will clubs, so get a new shooter involved have fun. Thanks are in order for our Range Officer and Target crew who as usual did a great job!
Be well, shoot well……….. Jan Sarras
Reno Nevada, PVGC 200/300 Scramble
May 10th and 11th 2007 found very few shooters willing to venture to the PVGC range to shoot in our 200/300 yard match! Too nice, too cold, too windy, not windy enough (LOL), too busy, Mother’s Day week-end, what ever the reason, we had but ten shooters contest this match.
As usual, we opened the range the Friday prior to the shoot for final dial in and tune ups as needed. Most of the shooters got their scopes dialed for Sunday’s 300 yard matches which helps save the wear and tear on the backer system. Registration was over quickly and benches were assigned which let the shooters set their flags before Saturday morning’s “Commence Fire”. Saturday morning was awash with breezes that started early and lasted all week end. The worst of the winds were in the PM hours and ranged upwards of 25 MPH. Tom Price and Bryn Borras raised the flag as the National Anthem was played. After the ceremony we began promptly with Mike Schreier doing the Range Officers job and calling shooters to the line.
Tom Sakai led the way “Tee to Green” in the LV @ 200 posting two small groups, one of which was also small group of the match, 0.388. Tom shot the only agg. in the twos, a nice for the conditions .2730. Bryn Borras took second, .3165 followed by a .3441 posted by Tom Price. After a short lunch break we moved on to the HV @ 200 yards. Since we did not rotate benches, we were quickly back at the line enduring even more wind than in the AM match.
HV @ 200; 1st place repeat was meted out again by Tom Sakai. Tom had not lost a beat as he had just come off of a 200 agg. win in Folsom last week. While winning the HV stage, Tom also won three of the five matches. Tom’s small group winner was a .349. Local shooter Cody Archibald whooped up on his dad with a .4272 for 2nd and Steve Archibald placed third posting a .4702. With an early finish, around 2:00 pm, the range was once again open for shooters to practice if they wished. Around 5pm we set the backers at 300 yards to be ready for Sunday’s event. Everyone rotated 7 benches readying for Sunday’s contest. Our local crew removed the backers at 200 and set the 300 yard backers in less than 30 minutes. Good job gentlemen! It was quite windy all evening but settled a little in the early morning hours, only to ramp up before start time Sunday morning.
HV at 300 looked like a mirror image of Tom Sakai’s Saturday performance. Shooting small group, .794 and another match winner, Tom took first with a .3499. Bryn Borras shot a .3743 for 2nd followed closely by Steve Archibald’s .3756 for third. The wind was pretty switchy all morning and then picked and kept us in somewhat of a steady hard blow from the East averaging around 23MPH. We stopped 45 minutes for lunch and things were under way again by 11:30 am.
We have not yet figured out what Tom had for lunch but get in touch with him and DO NOT EAT ANY OF IT! Local shooter Lonnie Gordon found something in the wind and won the LV @ 300 with a .5982 agg. Steve Archibald took 2nd, .6443 and “ Pops” AKA Don Archibald, nailed down third with .7861 agg. With the wind as it was, only one group under the one inch mark was shot in this event. The small group was fired by Tom Price, an outstanding .806.
The flag field was quickly cleared by the contestants and the crew awaited the shooters to assemble for the awards. Awards were given out as merited and the grands ended as such:
LV: Steve Archibald, Lonnie Gordon, and Tom Price
HV: Tom Sakai, Steve Archibald and Bryn Borras
Two Gun: Steve Archibald, Tom Sakai and Cody Archibald
Thanks to those that attended and to our great crew in helping us through yet another match. Bring a friend to the next shoot you attend to help expose our sport and encourage new membership, both locally and in your region. Be well, shoot well, and I hope to see you on the line supporting YOUR sport! Jan Sarras
L-R Cody Archibald,Lonnie Gordon,Don Archibald, Tom Price, Tom Sakai, Everet Smith,Steve Archibald and Bryn Borras
2007 Long Range Varmint Nationals
June 9th and 10th, PVGC. Reno, Nv.
This 2007 event went off right on time and in really tough conditions. Tom Price and Bryn Borras did the honors while raising the Flag of these United States, thanks gentlemen. RO Mike Schreier called relay one to the line and the event was soon underway.
The best conditions of the entire shoot were enjoyed in this relay and Tom DeBacco took advantage firing a nice .386 that held throughout the agg. for a small group winner. Bryn Borras won the LV 200 with a .2972 followed by Tom Sakai’s .2992 and Dangerous Bob Dorton of Sacramento garnered third place shooting a .3236.
We took an hour lunch break as Sub sandwiches were downed and some shooters changed over to their HV rifles. Somewhere along the way we were down about 20 minutes as the eventual 2-Gun winner repaired the backer system. Mr. Bob McGraw led the way to victory in the HV with a .3228 agg. Robert Seeman, from Canada, captured second, .3432, followed in third by Everet Smith’s .3445. Small group was shot by Jan Sarras, .467.
After the last match of the afternoon, the target crew of local shooters placed the backers at 300 yards and removed the 200 yard backer system as well as moved the stationary backers out to 300 yards. A lot of work in high winds!
Sunday morning dawned with conditions somewhat worse than Saturday’s to test our abilities at 300 yards. With rifles sighted in on the practice frames to get on at 300 yards, we definitely saved a lot of wear and tear on the backer system. Bill Mellor led the way firing a .3144 agg to win the HV 300. Local shooter Steve Archibald took 2nd, .4070 followed by Everet Smith’s .4463. Jeff Yost shot the small group for the agg, 492. Lunch was served by the target crew, chili dogs, sodas and chips. We took only 45 minutes for lunch to help the travelers get back on the road a little sooner.
After lunch the LV class was contested at 300 yards in the worst conditions I have experience on this property. A lot of “expletives” were heard coming from the benches. Steve Archibald had things figured out in route to posting a first place agg of .5559. Warren Stallings took 2nd with a .6275 followed in third by Tom Sakai who also shot a .915 to win the small group award.
The LV agg was won by Steve Archibald and the HV agg was won by Everet Smith. Steve Archibald is the 2007 Long Range Varmint National 2 GUN Champion. Congratulations Steve on a hard won shoot and to all the other winners and participants
Most everyone stayed for the awards and that is appreciated. The next time you do well, , it’ll make you happy to hear the accolades that you have earned from your friends and competitors. As always, please do what you can; at least make an effort to support our sport and promote the game to your friends and social circle of friends to help boost participation at the local, regional and National levels. Thanks to all that helped to make this a successful shoot. Be well, shoot well………… Jan Sarras
2007 Unlimited Invitational Match Report September 8th and 9th PVGC. Reno, NV
This was one of the most enjoyable events of the year.
We utilized a unique format for the first time with two (2) UNL 5 Shot 100 Yard events on Saturday (the AM Agg and the PM Agg), and two (2) UNL 5 Shot 200 Yard events on Sunday (again with the AM Agg and the PM Agg). This format seemed to work out quite well and great time was had by all.
Congratulations to Steve Archibald the Grand Aggregate Winner!!!!
Weather Conditions
We couldn't ask for better weather. As you can see from the table below, we were comfortably cool in the mornings and a little warmer for the PM Events. The humidity was quite low and started out a little higher in the mornings and dropped a few percent by the PM Events. The wind conditions were great in the mornings, but by the PM Events it was a little trickier ranging from 1.1 to 9.1 mph. All in all this was a great week-end for our sport!

Weekend Highlights
We had excellent weather conditions and the matches went very smoothly. We actually finished up before 1 pm on Sunday.
The competition between Jan Sarras and Tom Price to see who could accidentally blow up the most "Muzzle Mate" patch collectors was won by Tom. It was a close race, but Tom forged ahead to take the title when he lost his third one on Sunday.
Tom did a great job breaking in his flashy new red and black “Young” rail gun. The combination of Tom and the new rail turned out to definitely be the "right stuff"…as he took the Saturday AM Aggregate.
Warren picked some great tidbits of information over the course of the weekend including:
The wind flags that are too short to see at 200 yards …presents an empty space in his spotting scope.
How to enjoy his morning coffee more…keep it off your shirt and pants.
The finer points of balancing the rail gun top and the need for a recoil stop/band.
Tom threatened to wear his "The Pimp from Ripon" hat at the bench…so we threatened to establish a basic dress code…we did allow him to wear it as he accepted his awards. We were concerned that it would be too distrracting at the line.
Saturday Matches
The UNL 5 100 AM Yard Match started about 8:30 AM. The conditions were beautiful with clear skies and very mild temperatures. We had a little haze from smoke that had drifted over from the Moonlight Fire near Susanville, Ca. Tom Price (.2292) took top honors in the morning agg followed by Jan Sarras and bag gunner Mark Ronchetti. Mark showed a few railers that the baggers can compete! Good job Mark! Jan shot the small group with a nice .1720
With out a rotation we quickly rolled into the PM event and started about 10:30 AM. The conditions were still beautiful with clear skies and mild temperatures that rose slightly and the normal Reno breezes came up too. The haze from the Moonlight Fire near Susanville stuck around all day, but all in all it was still a beautiful day! Tom Price shot the small group of the agg ( .168), and local shooter Steve Archibald won the event with a fine agg in the winds of Reno (.2654) followed by his dad Don with Tom Price holding on for third.
Steve took first in Saturday’s 100 yard agg followed by Tom Price in second and Jan Sarras in third. The backers were quickly moved out to 200 yards so the shooters could rotate benches and arrange their flags and we still had time for dialing in the rails for Sunday’s 200 yard event. Thanks are in order for our Target crew and the “Girls” Kerry Sarras and Jan Falzone. These two “Ladies” have worked every match for the last three years and make everyone feel comfortable while maintaining the professional endeavors of placing targets, scoring and posting the results in a timely fashion, our sincere thanks! We also handed out the day’s awards as we wanted to get as much done as possible so the traveling shooters would be able to get on road early on Sunday.
Sunday Matches
The UNL 5 shot 200 Yard Event started about 8:00 AM. The conditions continued from Saturday and were beautiful with clear skies and very mild temperatures. The haze from the Moonlight Fire near Susanville continued to linger, but this still continued to be the nicest weekend we’ve seen in months!
Jan Sarras not only shot the small group (.296) of the AM matches but also took the agg with a nice .2317. Tom Price had given Jan some “Rail” schooling on Friday and apparently he took Tom’s advice! Don Archibald pinned down second followed by Warren Stallings’s .2846 for third. By 10:30 AM we started the morning’s afternoon event.
After warming up in the AM shoot, Cody Archibald turned it on winning the PM shoot with a .2679 agg. Cody’s granddad Don took second and also fired a small group target of .331 in pretty stiff breezes. Warren Stallings hung on for third while figuring out some intricacies of his rail. We wish Warren a safe and fruitful trip as he heads out to the NBRSA Nationals following our shoot. Warren has had a big hand in this report and in posting the stats. If everyone pitches in just little, things really go smoothly for all concerned, thanks Warren!
Don Archibald took the 200 yard PM agg with a .2734 followed by grandson Cody’s .2825 and Jan Sarras garnered a third place finish with his .3018 agg.
With consistency be the big factor, Steve Archibald was the Grand Agg winner for the week-end. Steve’s agg was .3006 followed closely by his father Don’s. 3041 and Jan Sarras took third with a .3061. A mere .005 separated the top three shooters. Congratulations to all contestants and thanks for your support!
As always, please do whatever you can do to support your sport on a local, regional and National level. Be well, shoot well, and we hope to see you on the firing line,( at the range that is!)
Nevada State Shoot
2008 LV/HV
This was our first shoot of the season here in Northern Nevada,. The weather man was about as truthful as your “lying flags”. The morning dawned beautifully and things soon worsened as the winds picked up and smoke from God knows where filled the air and hazed out the brightness of the sun. A lot of tearful eyes were not to be blamed on the smoke as we endured winds ranging from 9 to 23 mph per the anemometer owned by our 2 Gun State Champ Tom Sakai.
Tom Price and Chris Chimits did the honors as the Grand Ole Flag was raised above the arid flag field as the Star Spangled Banner was played.
Contestants were soon on the line and shots resounded shortly there after. Tom Sakai took top honors in the LV 100, also shooting the small group of the agg, a nice .157. Tom Price was second followed by local shooter Lonnie Gordon.
Without a bench or yardage change we were entertained even more as the desert breezes turned to high desert winds. Tom Price shot the small group posting .121 in the HV100 agg. A .3937 was good enough in these conditions for Jan Sarras to win the yardage. Everet Smith snagged second followed by Jeff Schopper in third.
At the day’s end we rotated benches as the crew moved the frames out to 200 yards for Sunday’s event in the HV class.
We got underway promptly at 8:00 am even though we had a slight malfunction as we lost a cable on the moving backer system, no problem for the maker, Steve Archibald. As a side note I would like to mention that Steve and his dad Don along with Steve’s sons Cody and Travis and daughter Sarah all participated in the shoot. Shooting her first match, Sara took a match winner in the LV 200 yard event.
Everet Smith took the win with a nice .3001 in light but tricky conditions in the HV 200 yard agg. A mere .005 short of that found Dangerous Bob Dorton taking the second spot followed by Chris Chimits Tom Sakai shot the small group of .336.
Jan Sarras won the LV 200 yard event and was the only shooter not posting a one inch group. Following close behind were Steve Archibald and Tom Price. Dangerous Bob Dorton had the small group of .427.
Tom Sakai won the LV Grand and Everet Smith won the HV Grand. Tom Sakai is the 2Gun Nevada 2008 champion. Congratulation to all the winners and I thank all the participants.
The target crew of Kerry Sarras and Jan Falzone once again did an excellent job in setting , measuring and posting targets as well as calling the line, thanks ladies.
Please support our sport at the local, regional and national events. I hope to see some old friends and make some new too this coming seasons. Be well and shoot well.

Bryn Borras, 2009 Long Range Varmint National Champion
This is the fourth year that Palomino Valley Gun Club has hosted the LRVN. Again, as in the previous years we had very nice weather. The wind was as usual, unkind! We experienced very little moisture in the form of light drizzles lasting only minutes on Saturday and no rain on Sunday! We reveled the temperatures in the low 700s, really quite comfortable.
Tom Price honored us once again raising the flag with the help of Bryn Borras. After the pledge was recited the shoot was soon underway. As soon as everyone was dialed in at 300 yards in the LV class, Bob McGraw laid down a very nice .437 which was small group for the yardage in route to winning the LV 300 yard aggregate. Tom Sakai took second followed by Bryn Borras in third.
Quickly moving forward to avoid the thunder storms fast approaching from the west, we continued on to the HV at 300. Jack Childers took this win by a mere .012, very nice Jack! Bryn Borras took second and local shooter Steve Archibald was third! "Dangerous "Bob Dorton shot a small yardage winner in match three posting a .667 target! Out of 125 targets shot in the afternoon winds, only 8 targets were posted at less than 1 inch! In fact, two, inch plus targets were good enough for match winners!
When we finished the 300, the backers were reset to 200 for Sunday's activities!
Most folks moved their flags so we could get a prompt start at the 200 yard range! We started right on time. Tom Price led the way in the HV class at 200 yards. Everet Smith shot well enough to capture second and Bob McGraw was at his heels taking third. Lonnie Gordon had the yardage winner with a nice .366 taking small group!
Bryn Borras won the LV yardage at 200. Marty Childers took second followed by Tom Sakai. This was a tough agg in heavy winds. Francis Lee's .319 in match four was good for the small group award!
LV Grand , first through fifth, Bryn Borras, Tom Sakai, Bob McGraw, Marty Childers, and Everet Smith.
HV Grand, first through fifth, Bob McGraw, Bryn Borras, Jack Childers, Tom Sakai and Francis Lee.
2 Gun first through fifth, Bryn Borras, Bob McGraw, Tom Sakai, Everet Smith and Marty Childers. Congratulations to all the winners.
Thanks to all that attended, a great bunch of shooters and friends! Things ran smoothly and without incident, thanks to a seasoned target crew who did an outstanding job along with our range officer John Drake! The locals all pitched in and helped moving frames and backers along with help from some of the shooters, thanks again to all of you! Be
