Reno Match Aug 15-16 2009. Ruff start Great finish.
By Kevin Masullo. AKA Rollyman
The Ruff Start.
Mike Schreier President of the Palomino Valley Gun Club and the FCSA’S Reno Match Director for the past few years had to resign three weeks prior to this match. This put a tough spin on things but due to the efforts of Randy Dirks, myself, and others the match took place as planned. Match directors are volunteers after all and they put in their time and effort as long as they are willing and able to do so. The P.V.G.C. is more than willing to continue to be a host for the FCSA but needs a minimum of 40 guns registered per match. This minimum will cover the costs of the match and keep things in the black. Randy and I attended the P.V.G.C’s monthly meeting following the match and there is a can do and great attitude for the future.
I think I can speak for everyone and give Mike Schreier a big thank you for all his past and continuing efforts and well run matches, Good Job and from all of the Reno shooters. Thank You.
I volunteered my services and with a smile Randy took immediate advantage of this and set me to the task of getting the Portable toilets, ah what a fine first assignment as a potential co-match director.
Now finally to the Match.
Well it is Friday morning and I have the toilet trailer attached to my truck and heading out to the range. It is a bright sunny day mild winds no clouds and at least for me some anxiety as I have never helped run a match before.
Fridays registration and all went well people were showing up at a steady pace with smiles and help.
Saturday morning finally got here and the weather was typical for an August Reno match.
We finally got the bench assignments out had our safety/shooters meeting and I headed to the pits to get set up, and the first shots started down range. The winds were giving us great trials and errors as the troll was out in force but all in all there were some great groups shot for those who were able to read the wind. We did have a problem in the pits as the pastors started to fall off the targets. I made the decision to mark the holes with a pen or sharpie before pasting the hole. This way we knew if it was a new or old hole. Later I learned that this batch of pastors are faulty and will be returned for replacements. There was plenty of fun, laughs, food and before we knew it the day was done. Saturday’s results were posted for the shooters to review and smile, cry or just laugh at with a shake of the head.
Sunday came along and everyone agreed to get going A.S.A.P. so we started shooting almost 45 minutes earlier. The winds were quite a bit stronger on Sunday but were manageable. The shooting stopped around 1:30 and the results were posted for review and then finalized. We had a prize table for the first time since I have attended the Reno matches and we also had participation medallions to hand out to all the shooters. You can find the results following this report. I think everyone had a good time shared info played tricks, and laughed at my feeble attempts to help run things. If I made any mistakes or errors I apologize and will work on that.
I want to thank all who helped out with this match.
Randy for stepping up and filling in the spot as match director.
Bob our line official and Tony our Statistician from the Palomino Valley Gun Club,
as always they did a great job.
I want to thank all the people who gave donations to our raffle.
List Machine & Gun Shop
Lehigh Bullets
Amer-I-CAN Enterprises
Only Long Range
CSACANNONEER
I want to thank those who provided food.
Brett B for once again feeding us those famous Burgers and Hot Dogs.
Paula D for baking Brownies.
I personally want to thank Sherri R. Mike M. and Cindy for assisting me in the pits, without them I would have had a heck of a time running my shifts in the pits.
I want to thank all those who traveled such great distances to ensure that we would have enough guns on the line. We had shooters show up from Alaska, Oklahoma, Texas, California, Washington State, Arkansas, and maybe others but I did not get a chance to talk with everybody.
I am quite sure that Reid would also like me to thank the prankster who helped him out with his scope adjustments putting his shots low into the dirt and way left.
Randy has passed the position of match director to me for next year. I have large shoes to fill hope I can do all of you the same great service as he and our past match director Mike S provided.
Finally a call out. I have learned via a thread on our website discussing how many FCSA members are in each state, I was shocked to see that there are close to 80 members here in Nevada. Only an average of three Nevadans ever show up to shoot at the Reno matches. So I say knock the dust off those rifles and get off your butts and come shoot.
I will be posting updates on the 2010 Reno matches on our website as the matches get closer. So for the latest info stop in and take a look.
Thanks Rollyman
